First Working Conference on
Wireless On-demand Network Systems
(sponsored by IFIP WG 6.3 and 6.8)
Keynote speech:
"Ad Hoc Wireless Networks: Protocols and Applications"
Speaker: Mario Gerla, Computer Science Department, UCLA
Abstract -
Wireless Internet access has skyrocketed in the last couple of years,
driven by the demands of the mobile professional. The future Internet
will link a variety of mobile devices seamlessly, allowing them to
operate as thin-clients of a much larger information structure.
In this talk we will focus on a particular type of wireless architecture,
the ad hoc wireless network, that enables "untethered", wireless
networking in environments where there is no established wired or
cellular infrastructure. In an ad hoc network users typically
communicate and collaborate as teams (for example, a delegation
attending a conference, a firefighter company engaged in a search
and rescue operation, etc). We will illustrate the basic architecture
and protocols of the ad hoc network. We will then discuss the
research issues and review the proposed solutions for representative
applications based on emergency recovery and automated battlefield scenarios.
